Upside Down (2019)

As part of the second-year module Concept Development, I had to work on developing three different game concepts. The third game had to be made into a playable prototype based on the theme Upside Down. We were also told to focus more on the game feel which we had been studying.

I decided to make a 2D endless runner game where you have to avoid touching the red rectangles. The core mechanic of the game was that when you landed on the floor after jumping, you would fall through and start running upside down along the floor as if it was a ceiling as the gravity changed. You could also alter the size of your jumps by holding down the jump button longer, and your momentum would also carry over the other side. This helped make the movement more fluid and made it distinct from other endless runners. After the module was finished, I decided to port it to mobile as the simple controls made it suited for that platform.
